Stamp Crisis: -huge impact on the colonies -all communications were used had to involve stamps -Stamp Act Congress (colonist met to come up with a common rule ) met in 1765 -Declaration of Rights and Grievances -Sons of Liberty put the pressure on the merchants and repealed
Relationship Strained: -the British and colonists never had the same relationship after they repealed the act -colonists did not want to trust them, while Britain tried to fix the problem
Townshend Act: -created taxes on tea, paper, paint, lead, and glass -collectors were stationed in Britain, real Britain citizens, and were often tortured by common citizens -riots occurred in Boston, and troops got sent in -soldiers remained there for a year and a half...
Boston “Massacre” -occurred in 1770 -Bostonians grew tried of military presence -they began throwing sticks and stones at British troops -British troops fired and killed 5 people -John Adams defended the British troops in court and they got off without any charges
Boston Tea Party -Tea Act of 1773 -Bostonians (Sons of Liberty) dressed as Native Americans destroyed 9.000 pounds of tea belonging to the British Company into the Boston Harbor
Intolerable Acts -Coercive Acts-all ports closed until the colonists paid back the damage from the tea party -Quebec Act- Ohio River and Valley -both known as the Intolerable Acts
Mounting Tensions: -1st Continental Congress met and denounced Intolerable Acts -Minute Men prepared to fight at any minute -Whigs (Anti-Crowns) vs. Tories (Loyalist)
Lexington and Concord -’shot heard round the world’ was the beginning of the Revolution -Lexington-British troops marched to arrest Sam Adams and John Hancock- Paul Revere and others rode out to warn everyone -British told 70 Americans to disperse and then shot and killed the first 18 colonist -Concord- British were ambushed by minute men, then retreated and were hit with fire as they fled to Boston
2nd Continental Congress -1775-1776 -Olive Branch Petition- gave King George II one last chance -George Washington, and many other influential people were to become leaders
