Diary Entry:

Dear Industry Diary,

Well as you know, the factory is getting worse. Who would have thought that without a labor union you have no representation? From what I have heard, the bosses think that this will be better for everyone. Apparently the cottage industry had a much slower outcome, and not as many jobs. I guess we should be happy that we are able to work so much nowadays.

Here in Manchester, I realized that I made a very good choice going into the cotton industry. I heard from one of my ‘co-workers’ that this city is known for being the biggest cotton producer in all of England. Who would have known? I sure didn’t. With all of this urbanization I don’t know what to think. Moving from the farm to the ‘big city’ has made some major changes in my life. Losing father has forced the whole family to find jobs. I have gone into working all day, and most of the night working in my factory. The only time our little family can be together is when I am getting ready to leave for my first shift, and mother and sister are getting back from theirs.

Today one of the other children working next to me passed out and was then taken out of the factory. I do not know what happened, I just am sure happy it didn’t happen to me. For if I did I might not get my wages for the week and have even more labor. The boss doesn’t cut any of us any slack, he calls himself a entrepreneur when you ask him why he has such harsh conditions, he says it will work out better in the long run. We must keep working, everyday. No matter what might get in the way.

I am really fed up, so I must explain more later. I just hope this all works out.

Sincerely,
Sam Bailey
