After the first world war, Germany suffered sufficient loses in lives and in industrial power. Entire cities were taken out by the major bombings, and the agriculture industry was only 35% of what it was before the war. 7.5 million Germans were killed, roughly 11% of Germanys original population. Germany was often thought to have taken the biggest hit after the end of the war, countries were all pointing fingers at Germany and blamed them for every loss in the war.
In the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was mostly blamed for everything that happened during the course of the war. At the creating of the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was allowed no representation, and had no say it what was stated and the regulations put on them. German leaders were forced to sign this treaty on May 7, 1919 to give back the territories of Belgium, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. Put to blame was part of Article 231, or the “War Guilt Clause”, in which the nation was to accept complete responsibility for initiating World War One.
After the first World War, there was dramatic change in culture, political, and social order. Everything in Europe, Asia, and Africa was directly effected. Germany was one of the countries that was hit the hardest, being torn from all directions, government falling apart all around the leaders. The socialist revolution created serval communist political systems all throughout the country. Because of all of the changes in the country, and all of the depleting of supplies and jobs, Germany was forced into their own depression.
Germany was somewhat forced into a hyperinflation which is part of inflation that is super high and out of control. Currency lost so much value that prices doubled on a daily basis. Although this was a way that they could pay back the debts of the war, there was no way to be able to keep up with the rising costs and make up for all of the money put into it. All of the countries economy was based on things in the war.
Some people like to believe that the unemployment was even worse then the Great Depression in America. With all the jobs gone after the war, there was nothing left to do in Germany. All of the money was of no value because of all of the inflation and decrease in value of cash. Along with all of the unemployment, there were major food shortages all over the country. The war not only tore the government to pieces but also all of the life styles. Farming took a major hit as well as imports from around the world. The British Empire blockaded all of the ports to the North. Leaving all of Germany starved and jobless.
Weimar Republic was the new system of government that Germany tried after the fall of powers in 1918 after World War 1. The name came from the city that the government was started in, Weimar. Some of the most prevalent problems with this system was all of the hyperinflation and political extremist that were flooding the country. Paying back all of the post war debts was probably the biggest challenge. Even in these difficult times, the Weimar Republic managed to over-reach the things listed in the Treaty of Versailles, regain value in the currency, and even create a new social and cultural impact. All in all, while the Weimar Republic had the 14 years of control, they seemed to have at least got the country back in a better state.
During the “rise of radicals”, the Nazis jumped into Germany to help “fix” all of the countries problems. Because of this people believed anything they heard, they had been in debt and trouble for so long after the war that they followed anything that sounded like it could be promising. The Nazis and Hitler promised ways to help them after all the reparations of the Treaty of Versailles. Promising them import and export of weapons, expanding the army past the regulation of only 100, 000 men, and the need for a powerful government. People were 100% on board. Over taking a weak country and a even weaker government the Nazis had total control.
In conclusion, Germany had a very hard time after the war. The Treaty of Versailles took a major hit to the country as a whole. Already at a loss because of the impact of the war, and the defeat by the British and US, Germany had to completely rebuild itself. Paying back debts and fixing all the government problems wasn’t an easy task. When the Nazis came into help the country, they promised help and were able to fix the problems set before them and the Weimar Republic. Germany had many problems, many too much for them to handle, but they had a lot of ground to cover to get back to their original state before the war.
