UNIT ONE PROJECT TWO Ancient Greece (Athens)-1. Athens was considered both a direct democracy and a representative democracy. 2. At one point in time, Athens was "ruled by many" meaning that all citizens (i.e. only men that were not slaves), had to be willing to take an active part in government by law. 3.When the body of 500 citizens created a law, all the citizens of Athens had to vote on it. With every vote by every man, majority ruled. 4.The citizens of Athens were said to have the more rights and power than any other country in the world at that time.
Roman Republic-
1. 2 "consuls" (the highest position in government under the Republic, elected by the Assembly and part of the Senate, shared the head of government for a one year term. 2.The Senate was a group of 300 leaders, made up of noble and wealthy families of ancient Rome. 3.The Assembly was common citizens of Rome, they had the power to assemble and vote on things out of the Senate. 4.The Assembly soon learned that they could get nobles of the Senate to listen to their needs because the Assembly had the power to choose the 2 elected consuls out of the Senate, putting them in a very powerful position.
Ancient Greece and the Roman Republic both influenced the way our government in the US. Greece was "ruled by many" meaning the every citizen were to be part of government and have a role in society. While the Roman Republic had a very structured government because of their various branches of government.
Greece was known as a direct and a representative democracy, thus the group of leaders that ruled created laws and all of the citizens of Athens were to vote and pass or fail the created laws. Because of all of this, the people of Athens were thought to have the most rights and power than any other country in the world at the time. In the Roman Republic the branches of government, the Senate and Assembly, had most of the say of what laws were created and passed. The Senate was a group of 300 influential people of the country that could be elected to be a "consul". A consul was the top and most sought after place in Roman society, the only catch was that the Assembly choose who were to be a consul. The Assembly was a group of common citizens, and were also some of the most powerful citizens.
The US followed by letting the people vote on the leaders they want to "rule" or set the laws for the country. They also use the different branches of government. So the "common people" vote on a someone to represent them in the branches of government.
In conclusion, Ancient Greece and Roman Republic both influenced the US greatly. The US combined most thoughts to create a great system of their own.
